We never ask for your password

You can't log in, so you can't appeal. There is an order that works.

Every official appeal we checked starts inside the restricted account. When the login is gone, recovery comes first, and the road differs by platform.

Short answer: recover the login first, then appeal. Facebook, Instagram, Threads and X document an appeal that begins inside the restricted account, and TikTok keeps a banned account login-accessible so the appeal button can be reached. If the phone or email on file is gone, some platforms document a recovery branch and some say the account is a dead end. A new account on the same device does not restore the old one.

Why recovery comes before the appeal

The login gate is the first structural rule of every appeal we reviewed. Facebook: "log into Facebook." X: "First, log in to the account that is suspended." The appeal is a prompt inside the account. No help center we read publishes a public appeal form for a consumer account.

In the cases we reviewed, one person wrote that the two Meta surfaces "point at each other continuously with zero way to request a review." That is a community report. What it describes is the gate doing its job: the review lives behind the login, and the login lives behind recovery.

Which of the three states are you in?

  • The login opens and shows a ban notice. The appeal prompt is reachable. Use it once and save the wording.
  • The login opens but asks for identity or a code. That is a recovery checkpoint. Finish it first.
  • The login does not open, or the phone and email are gone. The recovery branch decides the case now.

First 24 hours: get the order right

The first day is for finding out which door is actually open.

1
Start here

Try the platform's own recovery entry point

Use a device you have used for that account before; Facebook's hacked-account help recommends this. Write down the screen, the exact message and the time.

2
Sort the block

Name what is actually missing

A password, a second factor, an email or phone that no longer exists, or a failed identity check. These are four branches, and each platform documents only some.

3
Official flow only

Start the documented branch for that platform

For Instagram, the login link starts at Forgot password. For Facebook, facebook.com/login/identify has a "No longer have access to these?" branch. Use the map before a route someone sent you.

4
Build the file

Assemble the ownership evidence while you wait

Dated screenshots of every notice, the email and phone on the account when it worked, the device type used at signup, and a dated list of what you tried. ID documents stay inside the platform's own flow.

5
Do not do this

Do not create a replacement account on the same device

In the cases we reviewed, new accounts were disabled almost immediately and could be linked back to the old one. TikTok's policy allows a permanent ban for attempts to avoid a restriction on another account you own.

Not sure which branch you are in? A free diagnosis checks the screen, the platform and your country against the documented recovery route, before you send anything. Start here.

Recovery map: what each platform documents

Use the row for the platform that holds the account. Where no route is published, none is documented.

Documented recovery routes and dead ends. The screen you see decides the detail.
PlatformWhat is documentedDocumented dead endWhat to prepare
Instagram Forgot password → username, email or phone → Send login link. If that fails, the help page describes a support request and an identity check: the signup email or phone and device type, or a video selfie. Help page A deleted account: "there's no way to restore it." A failed ID review can lead to disablement and data deletion. Signup email and phone, device type, a secure email for the reply, video selfie readiness.
Facebook Log in; the hacked wizard walks through security steps on a device used before. If email and phone are gone, facebook.com/login/identify has a "No longer have access to these?" branch. A failed appeal: permanent disable with no further review. The recovery contact cannot be one already used on the account. A device with prior logins, a fresh email or phone, an ID if asked.
TikTok A banned account stays login-accessible: open the ban notification, tap Appeal. Recovery also describes verification through friends, with at least two friends and limits on requests per day. Help page No general ID appeal for a normal ban; ID and selfies are documented only for underage appeals. The web form is a report form, not the appeal channel. Phone and email on file, two friends who can verify you, a data download while login works.
LinkedIn Log in and follow the on-screen identity steps: ID country, Persona terms, selfie, government ID. Canada, the EU and the UK can attach a notarized Affidavit of Identity to the support case. Help page An unsupported ID country: "Our verification system does not currently support the country that issued your identification document." A driving licence, government ID or passport, a notary in Canada, the EU or the UK, a support case.
X A locked account unlocks with the phone, the email or a captcha. A suspended account: log in to it, wait for prompts, then file the appeal from a new browser tab. Help page Lost phone and email: "Sometimes the only option in this situation is to create a new account." No ID route is documented. The phone or email attached to the account. A different email does not create a new case.

A route listed here is documented, not guaranteed. None of these help centers publishes a response time.

The dead ends that are written down

These are the cases where the help pages stop. An appeal cannot be the next move.

  • X, lost phone and emailThe help page says that sometimes the only option is to create a new account. That sentence closes the appeal route for that case.
  • Discord, no backup codesMFA cannot be removed and new backup codes cannot be issued, according to the support article. A ticket does not change that.
  • LinkedIn, unsupported ID countryPersona cannot verify the document. The notarized affidavit for Canada, the EU and the UK is the documented fallback; outside it, no route is published.
  • Google, no phone supportGoogle's help text says you cannot call for help signing in, and warns against services that claim account or password support. The account recovery form is the documented route.
  • Instagram and Threads, deleted accounts"There's no way to restore it." A recovery plan cannot start from data that no longer exists.

If you are in one of these, an appeal text does not help. The honest next step is a data export, a business surface, or a regulator route.

What the wrong order costs

None of this blames you; the price is a next move made before the login problem was solved.

1. An appeal prepared before the login works

In the cases we reviewed, people paid for appeal help while still locked out. There was no way to file it, and no third party can open the account either.

Do instead: recover the login or confirm the dead end before buying anything.

2. A replacement account on the same device

People report new accounts disabled within days, and the new account can be linked back to the old identity. TikTok's policy allows a permanent ban for attempts to avoid a restriction on another account you own.

Do instead: recover the original, or read the dead ends first and stop there.

3. Weeks in the wrong recovery branch

Facebook's recovery branch needs a contact never used on the account. Instagram's hacked path runs through a login link and an identity check.

Do instead: match the branch to the screen you were actually shown.

What this page can't tell you

This page cannot tell you whether your account still has a usable recovery contact, which device the platform will recognise, whether it will accept your ID, or which channel is open for your country and restriction type. Those depend on the screens you see and the steps you already tried.

The order is general. The branch is yours.

Where this page stops and your case begins

This page gives you the general route. Your notice, account type, country and the steps you already tried decide the channel, the evidence and the deadlines. That is the part a general guide cannot do for you — and it is the part that decides whether the appeal is read or lost in the wrong queue.

Frequently asked questions

Can I appeal if I can't log in to the account?

Usually not through the appeal route itself. Every official appeal we reviewed starts inside the restricted account: Facebook and Instagram say to log in, X says to log in to the suspended account, TikTok keeps a banned account login-accessible for the appeal. If the login is gone, recovery comes first.

What if I lost the phone and email on the account?

Check the documented branch first. Facebook's recovery help has a "No longer have access to these?" path for new contact details never used on the account. X's help text says that if both are lost, sometimes the only option is to create a new account.

Is a new account on the same device a workaround?

It is the most common self-inflicted wound in the cases we reviewed: replacement accounts were disabled almost immediately. TikTok's policy says attempts to avoid a restriction on another account you own may lead to a permanent ban. A new account does not inherit the old case.

What should I prepare while I am locked out?

A dated screenshot of every notice, the email and phone on the account when it worked, the device type used at signup, any reference number, and a list of what you already tried. Keep ID documents for the platform's own flow only.
